ecommerce3With the boom of globalisation in the last 20 years, largely thanks to the internet and digital-channels of communication, we have seen e-commerce take on a new importance in global trade and indeed, in some cases become the single major source of revenue for thousands of online companies.

However, one of the biggest issues with a business opening its doors to the global market is the language barrier. China and Brazil for example, are both booming economies and as such many online businesses are seeking to take a slice of the pie.  But with English being the leading-language of many – there has been some initial shock when traders are requested to carry out business exclusively in Portuguese or in Mandarin for example.

Rather than miss the chance of a sale, businesses have subsequently turned to the services of professional translation services in order to plug this gap and break-down the barrier to trade.

According to a large online-survey undertaken by transperfect.com, “…63 percent of consumer respondents said that they are more likely to buy from a website available in their native language. That number is underscored by the fact that 73 percent of surveyed consumers said they encounter e-commerce websites that aren’t available in their native languages.”

When a consumer is faced with having to either translate it themselves or use a quick method such as Google translate – they are often already put-off and will leave the website and go to competitor that does offer a service in their native-language. The company has then lost a potential customer and revenue.

So if you own or are thinking of setting up an e-commerce website, make sure your target market can both read and navigate your site! This will no-doubt increase your traffic and sales and will provide a solid platform for further business growth in the future.
